The house

Built in the Kerala vernacular, and still lived in that way.

Patterned tile floors in jade and blue, teak four-posters, hand-painted murals and carved mirrors, under a terracotta tile roof. At the centre the pool sits in a walled courtyard, behind a tiled arch carrying the house's name in Malayalam — so the house turns inward and the street disappears.

Sleeping

Eight, properly.

Three king bedrooms take six. Bedrooms one and three open straight onto the pool; bedroom two is upstairs with two balconies, one of them looking down over the water. Each is a self-contained suite with its own en-suite bathroom and its own entrance. Two single sofa beds take the last two.

Because the suites open from outside and sit on different levels, they don't connect to one another indoors. Couples and friends travelling together tend to love that. Families with young children usually prefer to share a room — worth knowing now rather than at bedtime.

The villa is not sea-facing — it faces its own courtyard and pool. The cliff, the beach and the sunsets are four minutes away on foot, and the beach is public.

Check in from 2:00 PM, check out by 11:00 AM. The villa is let whole — the rate covers the house, not a room, and includes six guests. Every guest beyond the sixth is ₹2,500 a night, children included.

House rules

Five things we ask.

  • No loud music or parties after 10 PM. The village sleeps.
  • Smoking outdoors only.
  • Moderate alcohol is fine.
  • Shower before using the pool, and no glassware near it.
  • Meals at the dining tables, not in the bedrooms.

Villa Gramam is run by Sarwaa, a family business in Varkala since 2010. The same family runs Cafe Sarwaa on the cliff, Gramam Spa and Nidra Cottages.
